Discussion Questions

Discussion Question #1
1). Use an example from outside of the classroom. Discuss Subjective and Objective Claims. Give an example of a Subjective Claim you have heard or used recently AND give an example of an Objective Claim you have heard or used recently. Describe the situation. Describe the claims IN DETAIL (Perez).

Define:
A Subjective Claim is when a claim or statement is stated/said by an individual based on personal preference. It could be seen as a statement that is biased. For example what a certain person likes or dislikes.

Example of a Subjective Claim:
Two weeks ago, I went shopping with my younger sister. We woke up early on a Friday so we were able to grab lunch before our shopping spree. We went to a small Thai restaurant right across from Valley Fair Shopping Center. When we were seated I claim their Pad Thai was very delicious. But my sister states the sauce for that dish was too strong and thick for her liking. She preferred the yellow curry dish with jasmine rice on the menu. She stated that it was more light and less saucy with a hint of coconut taste. She preferred that better than the thick saucy greasy Pad Thai. I thought she was insane the Pad Thai taste awesome not greasy or thick. Besides her dish had no flavor it was bland when I tried it. I did not like it one bit.

Define:
An Objective Claim is a statement where you the speaker or listener can verify that the statement is, in fact, factual with either data or some sort of proof.

Example of an Objective Claim:
During my summer of 2011, I took a math course in San Jose City College. Whenever the professor would start a new section in the book; she would first provide the proofs to the numerous formulas we would be using in the section. Even though I had no interest in how the formulas were formulated it was nice that she verified her statements that was presented to the class.

Introductory Post

Hello, my name is Ellene Chan and currently I'm a sophomore in San Jose State University. For my communication experience I have taken a communication class during my freshman year of college, but it was a public speaking course. It involves presentations and speaking in front of a class of students, which is very different from Communication 41. I am currently undeclared but hopefully after Fall semester ends I would like my major to be Applied Mathematics with Concentrations in Actuarial Science and Economics. My interests include trying out varies restaurants, sleeping in, and watching my many favorite television shows. Thank you for reading my post!
