Discussion Questions

Discussion Question #2
2). Use an example from everyday life: Describe a vague sentence or ambiguous sentence you have heard recently. Where did you hear this sentence? An advertisement? Was it a conversation with a friend? What qualified the sentence as vague or ambiguous? (Perez, Comm 41).

Qualification:
Vague or Ambiguous - when a sentence or statement stated is not precise enough which can lead the listener to interpreted the statement in many other ways not just one way

Example of a vague sentence:
Once I realized what vague or ambiguous sentences are. I became aware of all the vagueness people use in their everyday conversations. So yesterday (Wednesday, August 31st) I had a closing shift from 3 PM to 11 PM at Yogurtland. Before we were able to close the store we had to complete all the closing duties such as mopping, sweeping, cleaning the machines, and etc. So we had to start about an hour before the store close or else we will be there til midnight closing the store. As I was cleaning the tables I asked one of my teammates at the register what's the time. She responded by saying almost 9 o'clock. I did not understand what she meant. Does she mean 5 minutes before 9 o'clock or 15 minutes before 9 o'clock or maybe 30 minutes? So I asked her to clarify for me. She replied its 8:55. Now I know the exact time and how many minutes are left before I can begin closing the store.

Alright, thanks for reading my blog! Hopefully this post is clearer than my previous one and not ambiguous or vague. :]

  1. This is random but you work at yogurtland? That's pretty cool. I went to yogurtland yesterday around 2PM. Sanrio spoons FTW.
Anyways, i like your definition. It's very clear and straightforward for people to understand. I also agree with your first part of your sentence where everyone uses vague sentences in their conversations everyday. We probably never realize it that we use it everyday either. The rounding the time is very common. If people say 8:30 or 10:30, people usually round up to a number or just too lazy to say the exact number. I know I do it sometimes. Well anyways, keep up the good work! =)

  2. Hi. I agree with you about how it becomes so obvious how many ambiguous or vague sentences can come out of a little conversation. I find it funny how those two types of sentence are so commonly found but people do not know they can be classified, such the simple answer for the time from your example. That example shows how it is used constantly since time is used to keep organized. I do not know if you ever heard the reply “it is time for you to get a watch” after asking for the time, that reply to me shows me that a person is being too vague. The phrase “I am done” can be analyzed complete because people normally no one knows what the person refers to with that comment. Furthermore, what they mean by done just as completely done with a project or just done for that day or maybe they are giving up and do not want to finish what that he/she is doing.

  3. Hi!

I liked how you defined "vague/ambiguous" first so that your readers are first clear with what they mean before you talked about your example. I work also and I also ask what time it is when I don't have my watch on me and they never really give me the accurate time, but say "it's almost 10" and so that leaves me asking them a follow up question with "what time is that?" I guess a lot of people do that because they get lazy to say what time it is, exactly. Your last sentence about your post hopefully not being ambiguous or vague also made me chuckle. Very clever. :)

  4. I'm pretty jealous that you work at Yogurtland! I applied about two weeks ago and I never got a call back! Put in a good word for your classmate ;) haha

Now back to the feedback. I explained vague and ambiguous into two separate meanings on my post, but I liked how you combined both vague and ambiguous into one meaning. You provided a perfect example of how your co-worker was being vague and ambiguous with the time. Sometimes I don’t understand why people are vague or ambiguous with their responses. I know I answer people’s questions with vague and ambiguous responses as well, but it never clicked in my mind to why. Just goes to show how the human race can get so lazy with speaking just a few more words!

  5. Nice job! Do you work at the new Yogurt land next to campus? Well anyways, I enjoyed reading your example for a vague sentence. I feel as if everyone rounds off the time because I know I am guilty in doing that. I am guessing, especially for time it is much easier because it is easier to be more vague about it. Personally I like being vague about time because I feel like getting that very exact time does not make a difference. I am sure sometime it does, but since I round up I feel I am giving that person a head start in what they needed or wanted to do next. At least your co-worker rounded up instead of down because if you did not ask again for the precise time you would be behind on your work.
