Discussion Question #1
1). Use an example from outside of the classroom. Discuss Subjective and Objective Claims. Give an example of a Subjective Claim you have heard or used recently AND give an example of an Objective Claim you have heard or used recently. Describe the situation. Describe the claims IN DETAIL (Perez).
Define:
A Subjective Claim is when a claim or statement is stated/said by an individual based on personal preference. It could be seen as a statement that is biased. For example what a certain person likes or dislikes.
Example of a Subjective Claim:
Two weeks ago, I went shopping with my younger sister. We woke up early on a Friday so we were able to grab lunch before our shopping spree. We went to a small Thai restaurant right across from Valley Fair Shopping Center. When we were seated I claim their Pad Thai was very delicious. But my sister states the sauce for that dish was too strong and thick for her liking. She preferred the yellow curry dish with jasmine rice on the menu. She stated that it was more light and less saucy with a hint of coconut taste. She preferred that better than the thick saucy greasy Pad Thai. I thought she was insane the Pad Thai taste awesome not greasy or thick. Besides her dish had no flavor it was bland when I tried it. I did not like it one bit.
Define:
An Objective Claim is a statement where you the speaker or listener can verify that the statement is, in fact, factual with either data or some sort of proof.
Example of an Objective Claim:
During my summer of 2011, I took a math course in San Jose City College. Whenever the professor would start a new section in the book; she would first provide the proofs to the numerous formulas we would be using in the section. Even though I had no interest in how the formulas were formulated it was nice that she verified her statements that was presented to the class.
Alright, thank you everyone for reading my blog! :]
First of all, I wanted to say hello to you, so HI THERE! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat job in defining what subjective claims and objective claims were. The content was very organized and easy to ready, which is lovely since it's sometimes difficult for me to read when everything's bunched up together.
I also liked the examples that you made. As for me, I have to agree with you when you said that Pad Thai tastes awesome. But that's besides the point. :P The main point is that you were able to point out that you liked one thing and your sister preferred something different.
The objective claim example was good as well. Mathematical proofs are the perfect example of objective claims. Even though from my personal experience, proofs are a pain to deal with, the objective of it all is to prove your steps to be correct, which is all that matters.
Keep it up! :)

First of all, Hello!
ReplyDeleteI just want to say that I really enjoyed reading your blog. The definitions were accurate, and the claims were interesting and relatable; which helps when trying to remember which is objective and which is subjective.
I liked how the subjective claim was detailed and easy to follow. Not to mention made me a little hungry just reading it. The way you compared your likes to your sisters made it clear that the claim was subjective.
But when reading your objective claim I was slightly confused. I felt like there was something missing. I think you were trying to get to the point of the professor giving facts without an opinion attached. Obviously math is full of facts but I was just a little lost by the end. (This might be because I haven’t thought about math all summer though!)

ReplyDeleteHello! Nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteI like how you separate your questions or the requirements in the first post like how it looks so neat and organized, really easy to read.
I like your definitions of both subjective and objective claim. It is easy to understand. Your example of subjective claim is good. I agree with you. Pad thai is so much better than yellow curry dish with jasmine rice. Even though I don't like eating vegetables, pad thai is still delicious.
I didn't really understand your objective claim though. Maybe it is the way you phrase it. Overall it was good. Keep it up! ^^
Hey There ellacom,
ReplyDeleteStarting off, I felt that your example for a subjective claim was an excellent representation of its definition. You showed how the difference in taste and preference that you and your sister had created a disparity between what each of you thought about the consistency and taste of the food. Also, your personal experience only made it better as it added much more content to your story. Like most people above me has said though, your objective claim didn't really give a specific enough example. Yes, proofs are mathematical statements but you should've instead shown an example of the objective claim by citing a quote from her in which she actually detailed an equation (i.e 5 + 4 =9). Other than that, your post had character and was good.
